QBR intelligently combines visual quality analysis with adaptive streaming algorithms to more efficiently allocate bits between simple and complex scenes. By using high bitrates only when needed, streaming costs can be cut by up to 35% without compromising the viewing experience.
Adaptive bitrate players can conserve bandwidth on easy scenes so that the downloaded bitrate can be boosted for more difficult scenes. Using perceptual analysis information and predictive buffer management, QBR reduces artifacts without causing stalls in playback or compatibility problems.
QBR upgrades existing streaming workflows and systems. It uses the encoders, players and asset libraries you already have, simply adding new metadata that allows packagers and players to optimize adaptive bitrate streaming.
There are no complicated upgrades required to start using QBR. It is compatible with H.264 and HEVC in all the popular streaming formats including MPEG-DASH, HLS and Smooth Streaming. MediaMelon improves the logic of these existing streaming standards to enhance quality and efficiency while preserving compatibility with deployed video players.

How it Works – Content Aware Streaming
Compared to standard adaptive streaming solutions where each player tries to stream at the highest bitrate, QBR dynamically allocates available bandwidth based on what is needed to maintain quality for each scene. The core of our technology is the QBR Engine that analyzes the attributes of the video content and generates the streaming optimization metadata.
